FAQ

F.A.Q.

My regular studio is closed during COVID-19, do you take short-term clients.
Yes. Complete our induction programme and train with us while your beloved studio is out of action. We love to keep the flame stoked and hand you back to your regular schedule when this is over.
Professional Development
We have had to postpone our tours of Lesley Logan, Megan Steers and Alex O’Neill King. We are working to bring online versions of these sessions to you soon!

TMRACADEMY
During COVID19 we continue to work with our apprentices on their Classical Pilates teacher training, just online.

Expressions of interest for next face to face deliveries in late 2020 and 2021 are open (Melbourne, Sydney and Perth)! Start with 5 private sessions and discuss your training options.

How do I get started?

Start with our new client ‘first steps’ package.

You’ll complete three private sessions to make sure we are training the right way from the get go.

I’ve done Pilates before… how is ‘Classical’ different? Do I need to do a new client induction?

Well, Classical Pilates is actual Pilates. In our humble opinion, everything else, is a derivative and misses out on the essence of Joe Pilates’ work.

We’ve found that clients who have done Reformer Fitness or ‘clinical’ Pilates need to start afresh. No disrespect to previous work done, we are creating a rich tapestry of movement and love to add our Pilates touch. We work unapologetically as lovers of the true work including Jospeh’s work and the work of the elders. We work technically, see every detail and also want to drench you in the real Pilates method! The exercises, the equipment, the Philosophy and the way we run our sessions is like nowhere else in Melbourne. It’s a hoot! Plus … the results …

Even if you’re a Classical Pilates lover, our studio ‘group’ classes run as Joe’s gym did. Do your induction, we will put a programme together (which evolves as you do) and get training as frequently as possible. This will include work across all of the auxiliary apparatus like the lesser-known chairs and corrective devices.

The Movement Refinery aims to give you a total Pilates experience at each and every session.

I have an injury, which class is best for me?

Complete your first steps package, we can decide from there. Depending on the complexity of the issue you may need some more support in your early days at the studio. Some clients who have had severe injuries have worked with a combination of Private, semi-private and eventually our group classes. We take pride in doing what’s best for you in the short and long-term. We can’t generalise though as there are clients who thrive with certain conditions in our group programme.

I’m pregnant! Which class is right for me?

Wonderful news, a baby!! All classes are perfect for you. As we have at least three options for your Pilates training, you can work right through to delivery (if appropriate) at the studio. Our Joe’s Gym classes will have you plenty supported through your pregnancy. We do recommend seeking advice in the semi-private or private setting as required and of course, we are happy to work in conjunction with your medical and allied health team during this exciting time.

Can I just do a one off class?

No. We work with clients at least a couple of times each week for a few months at a time. The studio is proudly low-volume / high-retention focussed. We look forward to showing you what regular work with us can accomplish for you.

How often should I attend?

As frequently as possible. If Pilates is your only exercise, attend multiple times a week. If you have a jam-packed exercise schedule already, try attending twice times a week even if for only a couple of months and then reduce during your ‘on-season’ to twice per week for best results.

When you start Pilates you start learning how to move in an efficient way and it can take time to get the hang of it and build your endurance. Attending infrequently will keep you as a perpetual newbie, the more often you come, the sooner you can confident, strong and adventurous!

How long do sessions last?

Private and Joe’s gym – 55 mins
Semi-private classes – 50 mins

Change rooms and amenities

TMRPILATES has a fully accessible toilet (and wheelchair access via our back door) and an additional bathroom with shower for your convenience.

If you’re early, enjoy our comfy client lounge and feel free to grab a mat and practice some physical self-care before your session starts.

I can’t make it to the North Fitzroy studio, where else can I train?

The Movement Refinery often runs pop-up events throughout Melbourne, online training and teacher training workshops interstate.

Stay glued to our News and Events page and social media channels to find out more!

What do I expect in an online Pilates session?

If you can’t make it to our physical studio and we’d still love to work with you regularly and you can do this through our Zoom platform. Whether you have just a mat or the full kit, we welcome your practice. You can train remotely once a week or daily … private sessions or Joe’s Gym. Whatever suits!

Once you’ve completed your First steps package you will need to be fairly familiar with the work and how we put the body together … as you’ll be in a shared session with clients who are in the physical studio. This will be independent Pilates practice at it’s finest!

While you travel or have unusual work hours, this can be a great way to keep fit and feeling great!
