Pilates … it’s like Yoga right?

The word Pilates is often mis-used… let’s clarify

  • The movements

Your sessions are built around preparing you for and executing large parts of the ‘Return to Life’ sequences on the Mat and Reformer as well as training on the Chair(s), Barrels and auxiliary equipment.

The order: Joe didn’t invent exercises, he curated series after series that are related, layered and develop you for what’s next. He did this most clearly on the Mat and Reformer and it is our job to train you this way. We also pull in other classical apparatus for TLC and also athletic development.

There are exceptions, we don’t complete the full list in every class but our mission is to provide access to the best instruction to create the best outcomes.

Joe believed (as do we) that we should move in honour of our anatomical design. Unless there is a medical reason not to, your body craves articulated movements that build mobility and strength, especially along your spinal column. The Pilates method focuses on moving in and out of positions dynamically with excellent form.

  • The apparatus

Joe designed and made equipment to exacting specifications and measurements. He was crystal clear on the apparatus offering feedback to the user and engineered the apparatus to literally stop moving if the user is not completely connected and embodying the movement.

We have assembled Australia’s most diverse and finest suite of equipment ready for your development in Melbourne, hand-made in New York and California.

  • The philosophy

There are many distinctions between Pilates and general exercise, but these days, the public is being duped.

If your teacher and studio aren’t promoting thoughtful, purposeful exercise with a strong mind-body connection, it isn’t Pilates.

    If you aren’t underpinning the work-out with a work-in, it’s not Pilates.

Mr Pilates was adamant that our first job was to learn to breathe effectively and then continue that in every movement and every session. If you are working so hard you can only grunt and pant, this truly isn’t Pilates

A Pilates session honours the full-body commitment - a legit class would never smash your glutes or overwork one aspect. Every class, your body should be soaked in movement head to feet, front to back, side to side and upside down; complete balance and rejuvenation of your viscera and lymphatic system.

The actual pursuit of Pilates is not physical prowess, it’s balance, harmony and efficiency through control.
